The unique force and violence of Francis Bacon's paintings really derive, at least in part, from a certain kind of acetic lebensfeld that he cultivated. He basically locked himself into this otherwise close circuit of his own reflections. The thing I was observing in his life is that he would write handwritten notes to himself about what he should be thinking about.
