Signs Operate in the Sphere of Action

A symbol represents something that's not present, and you can hold it without actually doing anything with it. For dog, a bell can be a sign that dinner is about to arrive. A sign operates in the present. It allows you to take a step back from presence and reality to some extent. The same thing operating as a symbol wouldn't necessarily do that.
