The Psychology of Curiosity in Science
In almost every profession, there are opportunities for the exercise of a disciplined curiosity intrinsically no different from that exhibited in scientific research. The growth of the profession of science to its present dimensions is not a sign of a spontaneous increase in the number of individuals gifted with natural curiosity. Originally, science was justified because it was for the glory of God or the benefit of humanity. This early confidence began to be shaken in the 19th century when it became apparent that science could be and was being put to base uses.
