There's so much disdain for political science in general, but economists just think they understand what people alike. Political scientists know public opinion very well; it's one of the best developed areas. But objective material self-interest is one of the weakest predictors of political views that we've ever found. And instead what normally predicts people's views or what they'll call symbolic issues.
