The Republican Party's History of Abortion

The Republican Party in the late 1960s was still the pro-choice party, not least because it wasn't at that point the anti-Catholic party. And for Republicans, abortion was partly a question of personal privacy and choice. So regulating abortion would be a way of allowing the state greater power. Within 10 years that has done a complete flip. The Republicans by the end of the 1970s are the pro-life party and the Democrats are on the path to becoming the pro- Choice party. That's an extraordinary shift.
