Epigenetics and the Pain Threshold
Epigenetics is the way that code can be interpreted and how it reacts to the environment. It allows you to regulate the genes up and down like a dimmer switch. Professor Spector's team wanted to know if epigenetic factors linked to certain genes could affect the pain threshold, which involved making life painful for many twins. For the Pain Project, we took several years to collect around 2,000 of twins and meticulously looked at their pain thresholds. In general, the identical twins were more similar than the non-identical twins showing it was genetic, but there were big differences. And this is potentially of great interest to drug companies developing new painkillers.
