Darwin himself gave hints that he was a group selectionist, that things happened at different levels. He could not explain prosocial behaviors until he added something and that something is not hard to understand. So selfishness beats altruism within groups. But altruistic groups beat selfish groups. That's the advantage. It's that simple that natural selection operates at multiple levels.
