The Origins of Plato

There are two key strands in Plato, I think, which pull in different directions. The idea that he wants to create a holistic political community is something that appeals to people on the right - but it's also quite radical. He doesn't provide any arguments for representative government, or democratic government, or limited government. And so that whole tradition that we now think of as the tradition that's victorious actually has no roots in Plato at all virtually.
