What Are Cepheid Variables?
Cepheid variables are, as the name would suggest, variable stars. They expand and contract expand and contract with a regular period. You notice the luminosity of these things go up and down the brightness. So if you've got one within the thousand light year limit of parallax, you can measure the distance to it directly.
