They fought in the roman army as young men, and as they reached their prime, many of them wele they couldn't vote. So they turned to money making. But the bigger their business interests got, the more sensitive they became to roman domestic and especially foreign policy. The futures and fortunes that they had built were all subject to the whim of their roman overlords. As marius saw it, he was the man best positioned to help them, not just the rich ones, but the common soldiers
