Dickens was a journalist who covered the law, courts as well as parliament. And so he did have a really deep understanding of how this incredibly complex and incomprehensible world was run. We meet jarndyce when he is appointed a ward of these two wards in chancery. They are both potential beneficiaries of the money from the will if the case get solved. He tells them with absolute clarity and certainty that they must never involve themselves in the case. It's an image of the court case itself.
