China's navy has expanded dramatically over the last two decades, but it does still fall short of Xi Jinping's needs in several key ways. China doesn't have enough large amphibious ships to guarantee a successful invasion of Taiwan. The Pentagon currently estimates that China has about 340, what it calls, battle force vessels.
