The Path to a Career in Academics

I left my PhD in chemistry and did a postdoc in immunology at Stanford with Chris Goodenow. That was such a big pivot that when I applied for assistant professor jobs back in chemistry departments or in medical schools, most committees didn't understand a person that had done chemistry and immunology. They didn't know what to do with you. In my situation, I basically had only one job offer out of fall of my interviews and applications. And that was really lucky because there were some really visionary professors who actually were looking for somebody that bridged from chemistry to biology.
