Vaccines Are Not a Viral Protein, but They Are a Weapon in the Immune System
There's a couple of hundred thousand and dodgen this retrovirous sequences in the human geno. None of them are capable of making rus any more. But interestingly, there's maybe a couple f dozen of them where one of the viral genes is still in tact. So they can't make the whole virus, but they still have the ability to make an individual viral protein. The reason those virogenes have not decayed or acquired inactivating mutations means they're probably serving some sort of function. In most cases, we don't yet know what that function is.
