Sugendo and Ascetic Practices in Japan

A shugendo is you can think of as kind of, you know, a japanese phenomenon. It's not attached to any particular place. A practitioner named ocubo sokudan came from hiko san in the early sixteenth century. He was responsible for compiling these large ritual manuals for shugendo that became a the cor canon for sugendo in the ado period. And he initiates two the highest members of the priestly community at togashi into one of themain shugendos. The practice has become popular around the country and many people want to visit mountains because of shugendo.
