The Clinical Pearls of Methemoglobinemia
To diagnose methemoglobinemia, we need to order co-oximetry on either an arterial or venous blood sample. Healthy people should have less than 1.5% methemoglobin. When exposed to some type of oxidizing agent, for example, sodium nitrite, higher levels of methemoglobin arise. Alternative treatments can include packed red blood cell transfusions or exchange transfusions to replace the dysfunctional hemoglobin.
