The original home of language learning is in face-to-face conversation. Having to negotiate meaning with other speakers on the fly sort of spontaneously seems to be one of the key ways to develop our language ability. The science, if we can call it a science of second language acquisition, can tell us about both the universal aspects and individual idiosyncrasies that make each of our language learning journeys unique.
