The Importance of Scalability in Data Management
At Lyft when we embarked on migration from Redshift to the hive based data lake scalability was by far the strongest reason. The other possible scalability where we faced really strong pain was around consumption so again back in the day Redshift had a very concrete limit of how many queries could be executed concurrently. And then final one is cost but that I think is a very tricky one because in my experience it's really easy to get misled by how much your system costs and that could be a really misleading factor if that is your primary driver for migrations.
All software systems are in a constant state of evolution. This makes it impossible to select a truly future-proof technology stack for your data platform, making an eventual migration inevitable. In this episode Gleb Mezhanskiy and Rob Goretsky share their experiences leading various data platform migrations, and the hard-won lessons that they learned so that you don't have to.
