Fidel Castro and the Soviet Union
In spring of 1963, Fidel Castro stood next to Nikita Khrushchev and Anastas Mikoyan. Days earlier, in the same spot, he had declared, long live the Soviet Union. Ruben Navarrette: The two struck a deal for more Soviet tanks and aircraft for Cuba. He says it was part of an effort to patch things up after tensions that came from missile withdrawal.
