After the fall of fort washington, was soon being pursued by lord cornwallis and four thousand british and hessians. This force was under the command of general charles lee, who could not believe that he was taking orders from some incompetent colonial hack. After a week of hunting for a way across the delaware river, howe gave it up. Winter is no time for a civilized englishman to be fighting a war.
