Is There a Shelf Life to the Post-Socialist?
In his new book, John Maguffule is trying to resurrect socialist motifs and sensibilities in Tanzania. The idea that you've got to get yours and by hook or by crook has a certain kind of acceptability for the Tanzanian people. But at the same time, there must be limits to collectivist state policy because it didn't really work in part when he was doing ethnography. And so what emerged are these two dispositions between an absolute Cold War dichotomy: one highly individualized ethos and another more collectivist.
