The spin doctoring happened already early on in Christianity. Even in the second century, when the church started growing and you started getting these rich folk in it. And so they came up with some of the explanations people are still using today. Jesus was voluntarily poor and he praised his followers for being voluntarily poor. Then if anybody asked me, he said, give away your money. It's right there. He never married, didn't have kids as far as we know,. Unless you want to go full damn brown on that, that he secretly married Mary Magdalene, moved to France.
