Gidders: The Chinese were adapting to the realities of the BRI, also adapting to accusations of predatory lending and the debt trap issues over the port of Mombasa. What was happening on the Kenyan side in terms of the shifting narrative? Gidders: These projects initially, when they are conceptualized and presented as these opportunities of development, they very much function as political currency for high-level politicians who choose to do that. But of course, then projects run into inevitable problems, problems that could be prevented from the start, but they are not deliberately done properly.
