The Importance of Public Will in the Criminal Justice System
The ABA has been warning that this system, the criminal justice system, is catastrophically failing our indigent defendants. There's a fix for this as you observe, but it's almost entirely reliant on better funding for public defender services. And there is no public will for that; there's an enormous public will for funding being extra punitive and hard on crime.
