The Power of Quickness

Lizzy is not a bit better than the others, and I am sure she is not half so handsome as Jane, nor half so good, humored as Lydia. We would expect to see her fail, wouldn't we? Expect to see her disappointed, get her comeuppance. Instead, we are immediately rooting for her. Her mother doesn't think she measures up, but the father sees something. And don't we also want to privilege the one who's a little quicker than the others? The one who, maybe like our author, is sly and discerning and sees things a little more clearly than everyone else.
