Frida Kahlo's insistence on wearing Mexican peasant clothing and hairstyles have been called into question by resentful indigenous Mexicans. Some scholars even describe renewed 20th century approaches to Mestisaje as Mestizo Philia, an obsession with racial mixing. While indigeneismo is usually perceived as a celebration of indigenous heritage and culture, in practice it was often quite destructive to actual indigenous people.
