Mike Miles was superintendent in Dallas ISD. He implemented some controversial reforms, including performance-based pay for teachers. More than three quarters of the schools that failed to meet state standards back in 2019 when the state first tried to take over the district have since passed state standards. There's still a few schools that have fallen short in the past couple of school years.
The state of Texas took over Houston’s Independent School District and replaced the superintendent and the elected board. But state takeovers like this rarely make schools better.
