If you're looking for an alternative to the current king, where do you go but to the person who has the next best claim? The king's son. So like Louis the 11th of France, who's one of my very favorite kings of the late middle ages. They called him the universal spider because he was constantly weaving a diplomatic web around his opponents and pulling them deeper and deeper and deeper until eventually they got caught and killed.
