jQuery Is Not Needed Like It Used to Be
The average website on the Internet shifts around 3 megabytes of JavaScript, which in my opinion is way too large. Whatever you develop nowadays, it shouldn't have jQuery at all. As long as you can actually avoid adding JavaScript to your theme, whatever comes with the default on the admin UI should not really affect you that much.
