The Cat Purr, and the Elephant Rumble
i decided to find out why that purring was so difficult to ignore. I asked karen if she knew more about how cats purr. Cats expand and contract the muscles within their voice borx or larynx as they breathe in and out. That gives them a really low pitched purr, which is much lower than it should be. The purr matches a much, much bigger animal. So the purr actually has a pitch that's the same as an elephant rumble. And karen would know, because she's actually studied the Elephant rumble.
