Tolkien loved to see the world and humans is very much a part of the same creation. Lewis' metaphor, he often says, it's like when you see workmen by the side of the railroad drinking tea out of their tin cups. Where Tolkien never does that, he never breaks the fourth wall of his fiction. He'll talk about we were in the lap of the mountains or the fingers of the wind.
