The Golden Calf Episode

In 1 Kings 1228, Jeroboam erects two golden calves at the northern and southern boundaries of the northern kingdom. The plural makes sense for Jeroboam, but not for the golden calf episode. It's possible that the calf does not represent specifically a God at all, but is something like a throne or better a platform that God stands on.
