By 2010, there were four main flavors of virtual worlds: massively multiplayer online games like RuneScape and World of Warcraft. These virtual worlds didn't rely on a hardware peripheral like virtual reality did. There was no head-mounted display, so they could be experienced through a conventional computer monitor. They didn't require this immersive, haptic system to make them work.
