For your typical social mammal out there, us is somewhat synonymous with related to you. And it's a matter of just how much of a degree of relatedness you share. What color you wear is enough of a signal to determine who you kill and who you would give your life up for defending. You talk a lot in the book about this ability to utilize kind of these artificial symbols as cues for that dividing line.
