Franco was posted to Spanish Morocco, the only place Spain had any fighting military. He quickly established himself as a courageous and unflappable leader of men. His mostly Muslim soldiers were in superstitious awe of his luck. After being promoted, he retired from combat, becoming director of Spain's main military academy,. It was toward the end of this period that politics became impossible for Franco to ignore.
