The Effects of Endowments on Research in Universities
Stereotype lectures interfere far less than a freshly thought out course. Endowments are apt to unbalance the course of studies, some departments being hypertrophy and others starved. Even liberally minded chiefs hesitate to employ research workers whose activities may cause financial loss to the department. Civil service and army methods of administration are essentially unsuitable for the carrying on of research.
