The project of the nation state involves new conceptions of membership, says Ravi Agrawal. Nehru and Patel were not gung over about nationalism but saw it as a transitory stage to something else., he adds. He argues that any project of homogenization at a local level would require actually breaking people from their local identities or bonds.
