The Imposter Syndrome

A good talking to or being embarrassed definitely can create a sense that one wants to hide or misrepresent one's growing edge. So I wonder if you're talking about shame of the kid who would be, to use your example, who'd be shamed to bring home a bad grade on a test or a report card. Could be shame, although we listen to some of our clients, it wasn't just shame that happened to them if they disappointed their parents. Sometimes it was more frightening than that.
