Diaz's Life and Career
Diaz joined up as a volunteer in the Mexican-American war. He advanced to the rank of Brigadier or brigade general fighting against the French. The French tried to persuade him to abandon or turn on Juarez, who was now president. Diaz refused and by the end of the war was a national hero.
