Jean Brody talks about being in her prime something like 50 times in the novel. This narrative voice is very strange. It tries to insinuate things, I mean, it's a guiding force. The question is there, whom is making these observations? But then, as we go on, we find most of the observations are false. Mary may not be that maybe excitable and not as book smart as everyone else, but she's been put in the position to be the scapegoat. She's made to be.
