There is a hypothesis called the protein threshold hypothesis that says, when you get enough protein in your GI tract, your brain starts to release your brain. The gut bacteria will sense amino acids from proteins in your gut and it will tell your brain that, hey, you're getting nutrition. It seems that with food cravings, at least, and maybe other kind of cravings, that just letting time go by will help - if you don't eat it pretty soon, you just don't crave it anymore. Just go for a walk or maybe you do something else before you reach for that dessert.
