24,000 rebels were fighting 19,000 Union soldiers along a three-mile semi-circle to the north and west of Gettysburg. Lee ordered Lieutenant General Richard Yule to attack Cemetery Hill if practicable It was an ambiguous order and Yule decided against an attack. Meade sent a Brigadier General named Gouverneur K Warren to a high rocky hill known as Little Round Top which anchored the extreme left flank of the Union formation. But when Warren arrived he was stunned to find Little Round Top almost completely Undefended The commander responsible for holding the hill had dissipated orders and abandoned his position.
