Helena: A Mute Protagonist and Dorothy Maguire's Performance
I love the way this movie looks in that regard. The Valleutin parallel, I think, is a really solid one. Because she doesn't speak, there's something almost quite sort of pantomime-esque about her performance. Her hands are up in her face all the time and her eyes in a big eyebrows and big eyes and they're constantly moving. So it's very, very heavily gestural. It's not necessarily stylistically, it's not the kind of performance style that you would see today for a mute character.
