How Much Has Diversity Improved in Newspapers?
I think it's improved significantly because there were gatekeepers and you have to go through the Guardian or the Independent all the times. Now if you have a phone, you can become something like a journalist. So there are more routes into publication, which gives space and more voices. And I also think that most institutions saw that their viability was caught up in this. The McPherson report had something to do with this. But not only that, it became... That was the report into Stephen Lawrence's murder. That's right, in 1999. If you want to be seen as relevant and understand stories that are taking place ... then you can't just have a newsroom where everybody went
