The Origins of Pronunciation in the OED
The OED started work in 1857 and predates the development of the International Phonetic Association by 30 years or so. James Murray developed a transcription system, it was tantalizingly close to the same year as the IPA in France. So all those fascicles published over that 40 year period around the turn of the 19th to the 20th century had pronunciation transcriptions. They all had pronunciations but in a rather bespoke system that Murray had developed. I mean, quite a good system covers all the things he would want a transcription system to cover.
