There had been carriages and omnibuses serving the area, but in 18 52, chelsea got service from the eighth avenue street railway. The ninth avenue elevated railroad started chugging along over ninth avenue with a stop here at 20 third street,. basically at chelsea house. One thing that definitely did not make him happy was commodore vanderbilt's new train line which ran directly on tenth avenue and started service.
