The True Origins of Circumcision

In Genesis, the sons of jacob are told they can't marry their sister if they're uncircumcised. They insist that shechem the whole city circumcise themselves. So what does it really mean? And maybe it's some kind of mark of tribal identity or some other just kind of a marker. But in any event, i was feeling like, you know, that kind of makes more sense as an earl ast origin of why there might be a certain practice in a certain tribe. This is, say, we all do this. That almost felt to me like the more ancient origin story. At some later time there was religious significance or theological significance placed on it.
