Right now they're interacting much more often with the observatory. They'll send o plans up to the observatory, and the observatory will just tick through them. So if you told it to stare at that spot and something went wrong, james the web telescope is smart enough to skip ahead and go to the next thing in the schedule. There's no python on the telescope. There is java script on the telescope,. It is a forked, private version of java script from a while ago. Is this something that people would find generally useful outside of telescopes? Absolutely.
