Churchill as an individual was determined to climb the ladder. He used everything he could, including his mother, her contacts, etc. Churchill wanted to be known and achieve more than his father had achieved. The first war he got involved in was Cuba, where the Spanish were fighting against Cuban patriots. His career, more or less, since he was a young guy, was in periodism, defending the British Empire.
