Woes and the Beatitudes
Jesus' ministry began with blessings and the Beatitudes, and in chapter 23 of Matthew it ends with woes. Peter Lighthart observes that they can be divided into woes upon the Pharisees for their effect on others,. woes upon them for handling God's truth and the law; then woe upon them for their neglect of purity apart for the purity of the flesh. Then finally woe onto them for the treatment of the prophets.
